Sunday Post #6 – Without Power

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly over on the Caffeinated Reviewer.

Good day! I am writing this from my parents home. We had to leave as our house was getting too cold. Go figure, but there was an ice storm last night even though we are technically in Spring. Several people in our area of the state lost power. I had just enough time this morning to get up, start breakfast, and sign in to WordPress before the power went out and didn’t come back on. So here I sit, on my parents couch, with a needy dog’s head on my lap, with the laptop. I know, tempting fate here for the laptop to be knocked off or something.

I had my first plane trip in my life. The hardest part ended up being getting through security. Leaving, I must have snuggled with AJ (our dog) too hard or something. There was a security dog who alerted to me, even growled. I was fine until he growled. We were told to leave everything in our bags which made the x-ray scanner part easy enough. Except on the way back…I then didn’t know what I was doing. And for some reason, we got there at like a perfect time where there was no line, which meant I couldn’t people watch to see what others were doing. The only sign up was to take all electronics larger than a cell phone out of our bags for scanning. So I took it all out of the bag, and put it in one of the bin things…which apparently is not what you do. I learned the hard way the laptop I had for work needed to go through solo. I was pulled aside and my bags swiped for drugs or explosives or whatever they were testing for.

Otherwise, they were okay flights. Nothing really too exciting, I did learn I do better with a window seat, and I get a headache from the going up and down in addition to the usual pressure people talk about. I didn’t really do anything on the plane, I was enjoying looking out the window too much figuring out what things were below us or enjoying the clouds.

While in Austin, my co-worker and I visited the Museum of Weird which I recommend you visit if you are in downtown Austin. It’s not very large, but what it has will blow your mind. We saw a show there where a guy put himself through torture basically. He put a mouse trap on his tongue, drove a spike of sorts into his skull, and hung fish hooks from his eyes.

This week I hope to read Road of the Lost by Aidan Russell, and Traitor Born by Amy A. Bartol. These are both eARCs, Road of the Lost just sounded interesting, and Traitor Born is the second book for the Second Born series or duology. I’m not even sure what it is, but the writing is great and I read Second Born and now need the second book.

I must admit, I haven’t really been writing outside of this blog. Until yesterday I hadn’t even opened my scrivener file this month. I would say life got in the way, but that would be a lie. I let my inner demons hold me back. I listened to their negativity – no one will want to read the book, I’m writing crap, I’ll never be able to do this for a living. It may be true that my writing is crap, but that’s what edits are for; and I won’t know if this won’t work as a full-time job until I try. So I’m finally overcoming these mental demons and starting to write. If I wasn’t worried about having power, I would like to think I’d have done more writing today, but if I’m going to be honest with myself, I think I used it as another excuse. My laptop still had battery life, and if ever I needed it, I could have come over here to my parents to charge my macbook. Here’s hoping this week will be better.

  1. Sorry to hear about the power outage! We’ve had an ice storm here too and sleet all last night- crazy weather for spring. Hope your power is back soon! And good luck with the writing. It can be tough to get past the roadblocks, for sure.

    Have a great week!

    1. Thankfully we have power back. We got it back the same day. However there are many who are still without power, and it snowed today. I no longer know what is happening with Spring or if it will ever get here.
