This will be my first time participating in the O.W.Ls in April, part of the Magical Readathon created by G from the YouTube channel Book Roast. You can see her announcement video which also contains all the links needed to participate in this month long readathon.
The basics of this readathon is you take your O.W.Ls in April, and NEWTs in August. G has created careers you could aim for, which you may hold if we were in the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter. I have not participated in the past feeling like I would be an intruder of sorts as I have not read the Harry Potter series. The furthest I’ve gotten is about 25% through the third book, The Prisoner of Azkaban. I have come to terms with the fact I have not read the books, and don’t exactly feel like a fake or intruder. With much struggle, I have managed to put together a TBR for my chosen career.
Career Path: Metal Charmer
For this, the exams I need to pass, and the books I’m using for each are:
Ancient Runes: A book with a heart on the cover or in the title

This is the second book in the Traitor’s Game by Jennifer A. Nielsen. I read Traitor’s Game last year as part of another readathon, and now I have the perfect reason to continue with the trilogy. Since this is the second book of a trilogy I won’t say much about it. In the first book we meet Kestra, who is a princess but she’s been living in exile. On her way home, after being summoned by her father, the King, she is kidnapped by some rebels. The rebels want her to retrieve the lost Olden Blade hidden somewhere in the castle. Kestra agrees, but is also trying to stop them. Not to keep her father on the throne, but to make sure the right person is made King. Kestra’s motives change, secrets emerge, and things get quite interesting towards the end of this book. I’m excited to be making time to continue.
Arithmancy: read a book outside your comfort zone

If I Break is a book I picked up from NetGalley, ashamedly, a few years ago and I never got around to. I don’t remember much other than this is more of a contemporary. Contemporary is a genre towards the bottom of my list of genres, if I’m ranking them all by how much I enjoy the genre. So, we’ll see what this one is about, and how quickly I’m able to get through it.
Charms: read a book with a white or mostly white cover

This is another book I acquired a while back and don’t remember anything of what it is supposed to be about. So, we shall see what this one holds.
Defense against the Dark Arts: a book set at sea or the coast

I’ve been recommended this series a few times but kept prioritizing other books. This follows a boy named Fitz, who is a bastard, but is adopted into the royal family and has to change his ways. He has a magic not accepted by the royalty, and is trained to be a royal assassin. At least that’s how I understand the summary. I’m guessing there is sea travel or something since there is a boat in a body of water on the cover.
Transfiguration: a book with shapeshifting

I recently started this series and am happy to be continuing. I will be listening to the audiobook using Scribd.
The main character is Mercy, and she is a mechanic who is also a werewolf. In the first book, Moon Called, she helps investigate some testing going on with individuals turning humans in to werewolves and then running tests on them as far as how much silver they can withstand and such. I wonder what trouble will face Mercy in this next story.
Plus 2 subjects of choice, for these I chose…
Astronomy: read a book (most of a book) while it’s dark outside

Almost any book will work for this prompt, and won’t be hard since I’m still working my normal job, just from home.
I chose The Kingdom of Liars because it is an ARC copy I requested through NetGalley and really need to read since the book will be published May 5. This book follows a man by the name of Michael, who was branded a traitor after his father kills the King’s 9 year old son. An opportunity arises to be folded back into the court, but it’s by the most politically dangerous member of the Kingdom’s royal council. From the synopsis I get he basically is thrown into a war between families.
History of Magic: read a book featuring witches or wizards

This will likely be the first book I pick up for this readathon as it is one I’ve been wanting to read and have a digital copy from my library. It is due back in less than 2 weeks, and I don’t want to loose it before I’ve finished it.
With the Witcher games, and now Netflix television show, I don’t know that I need to say much about this. I actually don’t know what this specific book is about, just that it is the most recommended as being the first book to read if you want to read the Witcher series. So here I go to dive into the world of the Witcher.
These are the books I’m hoping to read in the month of April. I think this is a doable TBR, but we shall have to see how this goes. Good luck if you are also participating in this round of the Magical Readathon and your O.W.Ls exams.
Yes!! The Farseer trilogy is totally worth trying. Assassin’s Apprentice starts out slow and little dull, but the story gets better and better as the plot progresses. Hope it goes well for you.
Thanks. Hope all goes well with you too. 😃
